Understanding Reiki: Origins, Practices, and Benefits

What is Reiki?

I could go super in-depth with this and probably should in a later post, but for now, this is the simplified version. Reiki is a holistic healing technique developed in the early 20th century in Japan. It is based on the idea that there is a universal life energy that flows through all living things. This practice aims to channel this energy, promote relaxation, and facilitate healing on both physical and emotional levels. During a typical Reiki session, the practitioner lightly touches or hovers their hands over the recipient to transfer the universe's healing energy, helping to release tension and restore balance. In with the new, sending the old out to be recycled.

If you want to be a Reiki practitioner, I recommend you learn the practice from a Reiki Master. Yes, you can read stuff online all you want, but there are traditions and rituals done so that you may be able to do it properly. I genuinely would NOT trust or buy any course online that says you can become a Reiki Master just by reading the texts. You and I both know that's not the way to go about something as deep and meaningful as this practice. That being said, if you have questions regarding how to find a trustworthy teacher, who I learned from, or anything about Reiki, feel free to send me an email!

In The Beginning

The roots of Reiki trace back to Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk. In 1922, Usui embarked on a spiritual quest and spent time in meditation and prayer on Mount Kurama. It was during this introspective journey that he claims to have received the insight and healing abilities that would become the foundation of Reiki. This system has since evolved, branching out into various styles, but the core principles remain focused on energy healing and achieving harmony within oneself. Something to keep in mind is that similar techniques were used from samurai much earlier and by other cultures.

Understanding Chakras and Their Role

Chakras are energy centers located throughout the body, traditionally recognized in Eastern healing practices, including Reiki. There are seven primary chakras (there are hundreds of chakras in the body), each associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. These energy points are thought to influence our overall health, both positively and negatively, depending on whether they are open and flowing or blocked. By focusing on these chakras during a Reiki session, practitioners aid clients in releasing blockages and promoting a balanced flow of energy.

The Mindset Behind Reiki

The mentality behind Reiki revolves around the belief that healing encompasses more than just the physical body. Practitioners promote a view that incorporates emotional and spiritual well-being as equally important. Kind of like when you go to the doctor for a check-up, but it's an energy check-up. This holistic approach encourages individuals to cultivate mindfulness, self-love, and inner peace. As people engage with Reiki, they often find that it fosters a sense of empowerment and motivation. Reiki requires everyone involved to be present in that moment, which leads to the main concept- just for today.

Just for today, I will not worry. Just for today, I will not be angry. Just for today, I will be grateful. Just for today, I will work honestly. Just for today, I will be kind to all living things.

That concept alone can be so transformative and grounding.

Improving Daily Life with Reiki

Incorporating Reiki into your daily routine can lead to significant improvements in overall wellness. And if you try it and it doesn't fit, then no harm, no foul. When trying to make any life improvement, all you can do is try; nothing is ever guaranteed. Many people report reduced stress levels, enhanced emotional clarity, and a greater connection with themselves (myself included). Reiki doesn't mean you are permanently healed, or that things will always feel perfect. It's building blocks.

The principles of Reiki emphasize healing and understanding energy, resonating with the idea that our interactions are not merely exchanges but opportunities for connection. While connection is essential for existence, it is just as important to know when and how to close off your energy grid/ chakras to outside sources. Especially during negative experiences, to remain grounded and not absorb the energy field around you, there are so many things you can do. The simplest way for me (this is also what my Reiki Master taught) to quickly close my energy field is to put my tongue on the roof of my mouth (closes crown chakra) and kegel (guys squeeze the same area ya know? but that closes off your root chakra). This has improved my daily life sooooo much, especially as someone so sensitive to energy. Put it into practice and let me know what you think.

Ultimately, Reiki serves as a reminder that healing and self-care are available to everyone. Whether you’re seeking relief from physical discomfort or emotional support, exploring the realm of Reiki can provide value.

As always, do what is right for you. And if you don't know what that is, then try different things. Don't get caught up in stagnancy and perfection. Be patient and kind, not only to others, but to yourself. XOXO
